Tell Me Something Tuesday

Hello everyone, and welcome to another week of Tell Me Something Tuesday.  This is a meme that was started by my friend, Cambria Hebert.  This is the meme where she asks us a question, and we answer it.  This week’s question is:

Do you like social media? Why or why not? What is your favorite social media to use (FB, twitter, GR, etc.)?

This is a difficult question to answer.  Why? Because I love social media, but at the same time, I hate it with a passion.  Let’s start with the reasons why I HATE social media.

I hate social media (facebook, twitter, goodreads, etc), because of all the drama I see.  It is easy to get caught up in it, and it’s so easy to pick on and bully someone online.  Take it from someone who has been on the receiving end of the bullying.  It has since then long stopped (many of you know the stories and the actions that I took to stop it), but still, it is VERY easy to fall into the wrong crowd online and to let these people get to you.

HOWEVER, Social Media has a lot of positive sides to it too.  Places like Facebook, Twitter and Goodreads have helped me connect with old friends and even new readers.  I’ve even met my first publisher through an ad on facebook! So, social media is great for publicity and for networking purposes if used correctly.

Overall, social media is kind of a necessity these days especially in my line of work…writing and publishing.  I’ll admit, I’m a bit obsessed with Facebook and Twitter, though not so much goodreads (mostly due to the author & reviewer wars I’ve heard about).

Tell Me Something Tuesday

Welcome to another week of Tell Me Something Tuesday, a meme that was started by the lovely Cambria Hebert.  This is the meme where she asks us a question, and we answer it.  Pretty simple, right? Well, it all depends on the question!  Sometimes they are super easy to answer, while others can be quite difficult.

This week’s question, is I would have to say, on the more difficult level.  The question of the week is:

How do you feel about negative book reviews? Writing them and reading them…

As an author, I absolutely HATE negative book reviews. Period.  No question about it.  They can hurt sales, and sometimes, depending on the reviewer, can be down right hurtful. I’ve been on the receiving end of negative reviews, and so I can personally say that they stink. BUT it also depends on how they are written.

I don’t know about you, I HATE reading reviews that have a ton of name calling.  I just don’t get it.  Don’t you guys know that your reviews are PUBLIC, and it can and will ruin your image as a reviewer?  I see this not only for books, but for apps as well.  I once downloaded an Iphone app for the game, Deal or No Deal.  I LOVED that game show, so I thought, why not?  I read the reviews, and they were just terrible. BUT NONE of the reviews stated WHY it was terrible. So, I purchased the app (it was only .99 btw), and decided to see for myself.

Well, it was an awful app, but in my review I made sure to tell the creator of the app what needed to be fixed. I hope that they appreciated my review.

As a reviewer, (I review books for Literary Lunes Publications and Paranormal Poison), I personally HATE writing negative reviews. BUT, as Heidi mentioned in her blog, we are all entitled to our opinions.  Sometimes I just don’t like a book I’ve read, but I usually try to highlight BOTH the positive AND the negative. Unfortunately, in some cases like 50 Shades of Grey, there just aren’t any positive points, and in those cases, I usually just leave the reviews on my blogs.

I absolutely DO NOT condone authors outing reviewers.  I was absolutely disgusted when I heard that last week via twitter. Author Stacia Kane kept going on and on about how awful it was.  It turned out, I was in one of those groups causing the drama on goodreads, and promptly left the group when I realized who it was.  I just don’t get it.  What’s the purpose of outing people?  Reviewers are an author’s best friend and can also be their worst enemy.

Honestly folks, why can’t we all just get along?

Tell Me Something Tuesday #7

Hello everyone, and welcome to another week of Tell Me Something Tuesday, a meme started by the lovely, Cambria Hebert.  This is the meme where she asks us something, and we answer it.

This week’s question is:

Do you buy books based on their book cover?

I’ll be perfectly honest, the answer often times is yes.  I know, I know, how very judgemental of me, right? But come on, we all do it at some point or another in our lives.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t buy books solely based off their cover.  If I am looking at a book from an author I don’t know, I also go by the description, and if I am on the fence about that, the reviews.

More often then not, though, I usually go by the reviews.

However, I am finding more and more lately, that there are many so-called reviewers out there that just don’t know how to leave a proper review. I don’t understand what all this name calling is about etc. etc.

But, I’m getting off topic.

My point is, is that sometimes I judge a book by it’s cover, and others I don’t. It’s human nature to do so, though it’s not necessarily right. I’m often attracted to pretty, and brightly colored covers. What about you?

Tell Me Something Tuesday #6: 50 Shades of Grey

Hello! And welcome to another week of Tell Me Something Tuesday, a meme hosted by the lovely Cambria Hebert.  This is a meme where Cambria asks us a question, and we tell her our answers. Some weeks, her questions are really easy, but others they can be really challenging; like this weeks for example.

This weeks question is:

If you could spend a day with a book character who would it be and what would you do?

This question took a lot of thought because so many characters came to mind.  Finally, I settled on just one; Christian Grey from the 50 Shades trilogy.

I know I know what you’re thinking…Beth, you said you hate this book…WHY ON EARTH would you want to spend a day with Christian Grey? Let alone an afternoon with him?

You really want to know why? I’ll tell you why!

As much as I hate the book 50 Shades of Grey (I’ll have an official review over the next few days), I find Christian’s character to be fascinating.  I think that if 50 Shades was re-written by someone else, that this book has some serious potential to be really good.  Honestly, I get the impression that EL James, the author of the trilogy, woke up one morning and just decided that she wanted to be published.  So, she did. But, this isn’t about how much I despise EL James and her trashy novel.  No…this is about how much I like Christian Grey.

Why do I like him?

I like him because he’s a complex character, and there are so many different sides or “shades” to Mr. Grey. Yes, he’s a control freak, and if he thinks that for one minute I am going to let him control me, he’s got another thing or two coming! LOL.

Anywho, what would I do with him?

I think a better question would be: what would I NOT do with him?  That answer is simple: I WOULD NOT have sex with him. His sick and sadistic ways are just not for me.

Then what WOULD we do?  I’d make him take me up in his helicopter (after getting me drunk because I’m terrified of heights), and I would grill him (ask him questions, not actually bar-b-q him sicko! lol).  EL James leaves so many un-answered questions and opens the door to so many un-asked questions, that I will ask him the ones that Anastasia Steele wouldn’t dare to ask him.  And, if he dares to give me lip, my drink just might find itself on top of Mr. Grey’s head LOL.

So, there you have it folks! My tell me something Tuesday post.  Hope you enjoyed it!

Tell Me Something Tuesday #5

Welcome to Tell Me Something Tuesday, a weekly meme hosted by Cambria Hebert.  In this meme, she asks us a question, and we answer it.  Some of the questions can be serious, while others are fun and a little wacky.  The point of the meme is just to have fun 🙂

This week, Cambria asked us:

If we could be any animal, what would we be and why?

This was a no-brainer for me.  Why? Because it’s a fun and a fairly simple question (in my opinion anyway.).  My answer, is a cat, well, more specifically, a panther.

Why a panther?

I just think that they are one of the most beautiful felines ever, and they are so fierce. Yes, a cheetah is super fast, but I’ll take strong and fierce over that. I was originally going to say a cat, because they are so cute and cuddly, but I am sure that is going to be over used lol. Plus, it is so cliche lol.

I also chose the felines, because I tend to have feline-like reflexes at times.  I have a tendancy to be quiet and sneak up on people. Plus, I can fit into really small places like most felines can lol.

Well, there you have it folks! My Tell Me Something Tuesday.

Tell Me Something Tuesday #4.

Welcome to another episode of Tell Me Something Tuesday, a meme hosted by Cambria Hebert.  In this meme, she asks us a question, and we tell her our answers. There is no right or wrong way to answer, so just have fun!  If you want to participate, go to Cambria’s blog and link up.

Last week I was way off in the number of TMST’s I’ve participated in. Apparently, I’ve only played in it 3 times O.o Well, that’s going to change! This is an incredibly fun meme, and it makes me think 🙂

This week, Cambria asked us:

If you could meet anyone (living or dead) who would it be and why?

Like everyone else, I had a hard time coming up with an answer to this question.  There are soooo many people that I want to meet, so I’ve narrowed it down.  Are you ready for my answer?

I chose my great, great, great uncle, President Tomas Garrigue Masaryk.  He was the first President of the Czech Republic, and was very well respected and liked.  I am honestly so proud and honored to be related to him! His brother, Martin, was my great, great, great grandfather. It took A LOT of genealogy research to find this out.  I was able to figure out my dad’s grandparents and traced back from there.  I found some family on Facebook (long live Facebook!), and connected the dots. I also joined and that was how I found out that Tomas had brothers.

Fun story: When my aunt Linda and I toured Prague and Moravia last September, T.G. Masaryk was talked about on every single tour we were on (or just about). It was so cool to learn about my family in that way. On one of the Jewish tours we went on, our tour guide actually bowed to us! It was seriously WEIRD!

To learn more about my AWESOME great, great, great uncle, go to this wikipedia article.

Now, enjoy some of these beautiful pictures from Prague, the city with which T.G. Masaryk ruled from!

That view was taken from the world’s largest castle in Prague.  I can’t believe he lived there at one point! (btw, the castle is listed in the Guinness book of world records.)

Another view from the same castle! Gorgeous, right?

The old President’s suite.  No one lives there any more sadly 😦 some view though, right?

The Catholic Cathedral on the castle grounds. It’s one of the only cathedrals that still holds mass.

This walk way was so small, that it needed a crossing signal LOL.

The view from the Charles Bridge.

Prague was full of statues like these. I was absolutely shocked and stunned to see them.  You wouldn’t find anything like that here in the US, would you?

the Prague Astrology clock.  This clock chimes once an hour, and there’s a little show.  I have it captured on video I think.  If I can find a good version, I will post a story about it with the video in a separate blog post.  This was the coolest thing ever!

And, Prague at night.  See that orb? I think I caught a ghost 🙂

There you have it folks, my Tell Me Something Tuesday post. I hope you enjoyed it!

Tell Me Something Tuesday #4 or 5 (I can’t remember)

Welcome back to Tell Me Something Tuesday, a meme hosted by Cambria Hebert where she asks us a question and we answer it.  The question is different every week, and some weeks are easier to answer than others.  This weeks question is:

If you were going to be stranded on an island and could bring five items what would they be??

Hmm…OK, so I had to think about this one. I wanted my answers to be fun, yet practical in  some ways.  I have to agree with Cambria, that while saying “My family” or my “fiance” are the most logical answers, they aren’t exactly the most “fun.”  Sorry guys, no offense intended.  Now that I have gotten that out of the way, here are my answers.

1. The first thing I would make sure to have is sunblock.  Why? Because I burn VERY easily, and I don’t want to look like a lobster when I am rescued LOL.  Hey, it’s the Irish in me, what can I say?  It’s an added bonus, that this particular kind of sunblock has insect repellent! It’s a two-for! Woohoo! LOL

2. The next item on my list, is of course my Iphone.  This thing has amazing battery life, and a gps locator.  While I mostly have the GPS thingy turned off, in this case I would make an exception and turn it on.  Not to mention, my Iphone is connected to my itunes account, and can act as my ipod. *big grin*.

3. A Notepad.  Lord knows that a writer needs to well, write.  I often get my inspiration when I’m down by the water. The notepad not only can act as a tool for writing a good novel, but can also be used to write a letter that could be put into a bottle in case my phone dies (which it will, eventually).

4. Lots of pens!  I LOVE multi-colored pens.  They will keep me amused (at least for a little while), and will help me write that book or SOS letter. LOL.

5. And last, but certainly not least, my Nook.  This amazing little device has a VERY long battery life.  I will use it when I’m not writing or listening to my Itunes or calling for help.  It’s got a wide selection of books (including Masquerade by Cambria Hebert hehe).  Plus, I have a word document on my Nook, so when I run out of paper, I can also go to that hehe.

Tell Me Something Tuesdays #2- On Wednesday

I know I’m very late with this weeks Tell Me Something Tuesdays, but I’ve been busy setting up my blog posts for my tour.  Anyway, I really like this week’s Tell Me Something Tuesday.  The question of the week is: What is your favorite genre to read and why?

Like several of my author friends, I primarily read Young Adult/Fantasy & Paranormal.  Why?  Because it is one of the easiest genres to read.  I have to spend all day being an adult, that when I want to escape, I want to REALLY escape.  I want to learn about a character who has the opportunity to grow.

Now, that’s not to say that I have a problem with adult books.  No, no, that’s not it at all. In fact, I have some guilty pleasure books that I quite enjoy.  Some might consider them to be a bit “trashy” because of the content, but hey, I AM an adult after all lol.

I love being sucked into worlds that have magic and vampires.  It makes for a great adventure, and almost any world is better than being in this crazy, messed up world that we call “Reality.”

Well, there you have it folks, my Tell Me Something Tuesdays.

Tell Me Something Tuesday

Tell Me Something Tuesday, is a weekly meme hosted by the lovely Cambria Hebert.  This is a really fun meme, and anyone can join!  Just go Cambria’s Blog, and post your link, and read and comment on some other posts.  OK, enough babbling from me! LOL. Time for the actual post.

This weeks question is: out of everything you have read who is your favorite villian you loved to hate?

I’ll have to admit, it took me a while to come up with some good answers.  However, after sleeping on it, I’ve come up with a few.

LORD VOLDEMORT from the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling.  Lord Voldemort is one of my favorite villains of all time.  Why? Because he is truly evil and manipulative.  He has this way about him, where you feel like you can’t say “no” to this man without the fear of being tortured or killed looming over you.  Plus, that whole “his name being a taboo” thing?  GENIUS!  Even though Lord Voldemort is just a fiction character, every time I say the name, I have a habit of looking over my shoulder to make sure that he isn’t there.

BELLATRIX LESTRANGE, also from the Harry Potter series was another one of my favorite villains.  I thought that Helena did a fabulous job at portraying Bellatrix.  She made Bella’s character come to life, and made you believe that she was truly evil.  If you ask me, I think she makes a better villain than Lord Voldemort.

Let’s step away from Harry Potter for a moment, and explore three other series, shall we?

Let’s talk about the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead.  First of all, this is MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE vampire series EVER.  Yes, it trumps House of Night.  My favorite villain in the Vampire Academy series is Natasha, who appears randomly throughout the entire series.  I don’t want to say much more, other than the fact that she was a fantastic, behind the scenes kind of villain.  *spoiler alert* Dimitri Belikov also made a heck of a villain when he was turned into a strigoi in (and correct me if I’m wrong) Blood Promise I think it was.

Now, onto her spin off series called BLOODLINES.  I’m not quite finished with this book yet, but I have about another chapter or 2 left of it, and WOW.  I knew that Keith was evil, but I had no idea just how evil he really was.  Not only is he a condescending jerk, but an even better villain than Natasha to some degree.  I will admit, just as it took me a few chapters to get into the first Vampire Academy book, it took me a while to get into this first book in the Bloodlines series.  I had to put it down for a while, but I am glad that I picked it up and gave it another go.  I am anxiously waiting for the next book in the spin off series which is called The Golden Lily.

And last, but certainly not least, is Hades from Disney’s HERCULES.  He was absolutely evil, but his snarky comments and sidekicks are what made him a great villain.  I love Greek Mythology, and I will admit I kind of got the idea of my version of Hades from Disney, but hey, what can I say?  He is a brilliant villain.  I give him “two thumbs way, way up!” LOL

So, there you have it folks! My list of favorite villains 🙂 Please play along, and be sure to visit Cambria’s blog to let her know you’re participating!  Comments are welcome and appreciated 🙂
