Writerly Wednesday #12

Hello, and welcome to another week of Writerly Wednesday.  This is the meme where I discuss all things writerly related, and was started by my good friend, Erin Danzer.

Some of you are probably wondering where I’ve been. Well, I’ve been around, just super busy with well life.  But I am here today to update you on some of my publishing ventures.

Regarding The World Among Us: I finally received approval from my attorney stating that I can sign the contract with Hydra Publications.  They are a fairly new small press publisher, but they already have a lot of titles out.  I have been very impressed with what I’ve seen so far, and I am excited to be working with Frank and the team. Not to mention, some of my fellow Otherworld authors have also moved there, so it’s like old times :).

It’s still so surreal to me that I am no longer with Otheroworld, but it was a choice that had to be made.  I had to think about my future as an author, and my future right now is with Hydra Publications.

I would also like to point you all in the direction of another new/old blog of mine on Literary Lunes Publications.  It is ready and waiting for followers.  I moved it from blogger to wordpress/bluehost and I couldn’t be happier.  I am still tinkering with it, but the blog is ready and it is about 95% done :).  So please hop on over to www.literarylunespublications.com and give it a follow.

I’ll have some wedding updates for you guys soon in another post 🙂

Writerly Wednesday #11: From sad to WOOHOO!

So, as you all know, my former publisher, Otherworld Publications, is closing on December 31 of this year. Last week, I was absolutely devistated by the news, and have since then made a very important choice. I was given the option to stay with OWP until the end of the year, or opt out now.  It was difficult because I like and respect Lynn, but I asked myself the important question; will it pay off in the long run?

After thinking about it myself, discussing it with my publicist, and my family and friends, I realized the answer is no, it won’t pay off. I wasn’t making a lot of money from them to begin with.  So, I opted to get out at the end of the month. The 25th of June is my last day with OWP.

HOWEVER, I do have some really good news.  I have been speaking with Frank over at Hydra Publications, who is also located in Kentucky and not too far from Lynn.  I have done some extensive research on him and his company, and have found all good things.  Yes, Hydra Publications is another young, and fairly new company, but they have a much bigger following than OWP, and after speaking to their authors, I am overall very impressed with them.

I asked Frank for a sample contract and looked it over.  He sent it to me right away, and at a first glance, I don’t see anything legally wrong with it. Granted, I am not an attorney or paralegal, but it seems legit to me so far. I do plan to have one of my attorney friends take a look at it just to be safe before I sign my life away hehe.

So, Frank and I exchanged a few more emails.  He’s definitely pro-author, and is very easy to work with. He seems to know what he’s doing business-wise, and we just clicked. Before I knew it, I was telling him that I would send him Prince of Darkness as well as my other titles.  He then proceeded to ask me if I wanted him to send me a filled out contract with my name, address etc. I told him YES to send it over 🙂

I haven’t received it yet, but I am sure I will very, very soon!

And when I do, you guys will be the first to hear about it!

That awesome moment when

So, I just had one of those awesome moments when I realized that I am almost done with book number 2 in The World Among Us trilogy :).  I just started writing chapter 16, and this is the point in the book where all of the action happens.  Well, all of the major climatic action happens anyway.  I have a clear idea of how I want the book to end, which is awesome!

Presently, I am just under 40,000 words, and have at least 10,000-15,000 more words left to write.  It all depends on how quickly everything happens from here on out.  I am super excited for this, for there was a period of time where I didn’t think that there would ever be an end in sight!

It’s honestly sort of a bitter-sweet feeling I have to admit.

But, I am very excited about this none-the-less.  It means that I will most definitely be finishing writing this novel before the end of the summer like I had hoped!  HOORAY!

Now, keep in mind, this is only the first draft. This book will probably go through at least 2 drafts before I submit it to a publisher.

But hey, it’s a start, right?

Writerly Wednesday #10: A very sad day in publishing

Welcome to another week in Writerly Wednesday.  Unfortunately, today is a very sad day in the publishing world.  I received an email this afternoon from my publisher, Lynn from Otherworld.  The letter said that Otherworld Publications will be closing as of December 31 this year.  I, and all of her other authors are deeply saddened by this because Lynn is absolutely AWESOME!

So, what does this mean for my titles? Well, it means that as of June 25, they will be taken off the market.  However, this won’t be such a bad thing.  Why? Because it will give me the time that I need to re-vamp all my current titles and edit them.  Also, I may already have someone else who I think is interested in re-publishing them.  I have a contact over at Hydra Publications that I’ve “known” for quite a while.  Frank is wonderful, and I’ve heard nothing but great things about him. In fact, he was the first person I emailed when I heard that OWP was going out of business.  He was just as shocked as I was about it.  I found out that not only is he one of the co-owners of Hydra Publications, but he also owns a used book store down in Indiana, and carries all of OWP’s titles so he already has access to my novel.

When I emailed Frank, he told me that he would be honored to re-publish my books. So, they may not be out of print for a long time. No, I haven’t been offered a contract yet, but between my connection with Hydra Publications, and the awesome recommendation that Lynn gave on my behalf, I’m hoping to be in 🙂

Otherworld wasn’t just my publisher…we were like a family, and I hope that the authors and I will continue to stay that way.

30k in the current WIP and a new subtitle

I did it! I FINALLY hit the 30k mark in book 2 of The World Among Us saga, which is presently titled Stormy Nights.  I will be perfectly honest…I don’t think that subtitle fits this book anymore.  Now that I think about it, I don’t think that it really fit to begin with.  It didn’t hit me until the other day when I woke up and realized that I wasn’t writing Stormy Nights…I was writing something else.  Besides, Stormy Nights is soooo cliche lol.  Therefore, I’ve come up with two alternatives for book 2.  In this book, Selene discovers that magic exists as well as other supernatural beings.  Book 2 mostly focuses on Selene and her coming to terms with and accepting all the events that happened in Prince of Darkness (book #1).

So, now that you know a little bit of the background of book #2, I’d like to propose two possible subtitles.  The are as follows:

Princess of Light

Daughter of Light

I personally think that Daughter of Light sounds better with The World Among Us, but I want to know what you all think.  I chose those titles, because Selene is Theia’s daughter, and Theia is the goddess of light according to Greek Mythology. Plus, Selene represents all things good.  What do you guys think?  Your input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks guys!

Writerly Wednesday #4

Wow, I haven’t blogged since March 25th? Shame on me!  Let’s see, what has been going on in writingland lately.

Well, I have a new banner on the The World Among Us website. Head on over and check it out and let me know what you think, will you? www.theworldamongussaga.com The site is still a work in progress, but it will tell you everything you need to know about my books from where to buy them to all the mythology.

I have also done a bit of tinkering with www.bethannmasarik.com.  I ordered a new banner for the website, which I should have in a few days.  I plan to do some more work on it this weekend now that I have some time coming to me. I am determined to get my website totally done, but, it is hard to do when you are only one person working on it, you know?  I run 4 websites, if you count this blog.  That’s A LOT for one person to manage.

Let’s see, what else can I report?  Oh, yeah!  I wrote another 1,000 words in Stormy Nights (book #2 in The World Among Us) this week.

It’s been pretty quiet around here lately in writingland to be honest. I will have a few guest posts up on www.literarylunespublications.com over the next week or so, so please keep an eye out on that.  Ummm….that’s all for now that I can think of.  I’ll be working on my websites this weekend, so I’ll have more updates for you lovely people.

I am also working on setting up a newsletter sign up form, so please keep your eyes out for that as well!

Movie Review: Breaking Dawn Part 1

Title: Breaking Dawn: Part 1

Rating: PG-13

Producer: Summit

Review Rating: 1 star

The review

Let me start off by saying that I HATE writing negative reviews.  Being a professional writer, I know they hurt, but, they are a necessary evil. Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, let me continue on with my review.

I used to be a Twilighter.  Yes, yes I know you’re shocked aren’t you?  I admit that at one point I got caught up in the Twilight saga love triangle when it first came out. Heck, for years I used to role play as Edward Cullen on Myspace, and it was fun. However, as I began writing my own novels, I came back down to reality, and realized just how horrible the series really was.  Stephenie Meyer became the reason why I write about vampires and shifters to begin with…I wanted to prove to the world that VAMPIRES DO NOT SPARKLE.

Anyway, back to my review of Breaking Dawn Part 1. I knew that there was a reason why I didn’t wait online at midnight for this movie.  There was also a reason why I didn’t rush to buy it when it first came out on DVD.  It was entertainingly horrid! (Thank you, Makalia for those choice of words!).  Now, I’ll admit, I cried in the beginning during the wedding scene. HOWEVER, it was also due to the fact that I kept picturing myself in Bella’s shoes and Kevin (my fiance) in Edward’s.  I kept telling myself, “This is NOT how a wedding should be.”  In my personal opinion, the scenery was ugly, and Alice did a craptacular job at planning.  Now, it’s not the actresses fault at all. No, it was the screen writer’s fault for doing such an awful job with writing the script.  You would think that a wedding was supposed to be beautiful, but that wasn’t the case here.

The acting in Breaking Dawn Part 1 was mediocre, if not totally wretched.  There were a couple of believable scenes in the movie, but they were few and far between.  It was slow going, and there honestly wasn’t enough action.  I personally think that Summit Entertainment could have gotten away with making Breaking Dawn into one part.

The movie’s saving grace? The wolves.  They were the truest to their parts, and I actually found myself cheering when Sam had his claws up against Edward’s throat.  I remember saying out loud, “kill him! Kill the leech!” The thing that pissed me off about the wolves? The writers left out that Jacob goes off in search to find his imprint.  I was honestly really looking forward to seeing that. They also didn’t properly explain the whole imprinting thing, which was a HUGE mistake on their end. They snuck it in the movie at the tail end without really explaining what the big deal is. I don’t know about you guys, but I was left asking, “wtf?” If I hadn’t read the books, I would have been totally lost.

And, honestly, even the honeymoon scenes were VERY disappointing. Yes, there was sex, but honestly, I expected Bella to have a hell of a lot more bruises on her then she did.  I was truly disappointed overall.  So much so, I can’t even comment on it properly.

Over all? I thought this movie was absolutely painstakingly awful.  It was a waste of time and money. Don’t get me wrong; I know that it impossible to totally go by the books with any movie, BUT, they did an AWFUL job with transcribing it into screenplay format.  If you’re looking for a time killer, then by all means pick up a copy and see for yourself just how horrible this movie is. BUT, if you are looking for a great action/romance/thriller movie, don’t waist your time or money with this one.

There you have it folks…my review.

About The World Among Us:

In The World Among Us, Hades, the god of the Underworld, plots to take over the world, and remove Gaia, the head Deity, from power.  In order to do so, he plots against his own son, Damien, and cons him into killing his soul mate, the beautiful goddess of the moon, Selene.  Hades does so, because Gaia is his natural enemy, and Selene is her favorite grandchild.  He thinks that by killing off Gaia’s favorite grandchild, he will weaken her.  With Selene out of the way, Hades then moves in on the Creatures of the Night.  He wants to kill off their leader, Jason Aysel.  Jason is the go-between person between worlds, and another person that Gaia highly regards.  Hades manipulates and cons Jason’s best friend, Leon Greene, into murdering him, by offering him Jason’s position as his reward.  Because of these actions, a war is to take place on earth between the gods and other Creatures of the Night.  During this time, Selene is reincarnated, and kept hidden as a secret weapon to win the war against Hades.  In order to win the war of wars, the gods and some of the demons will have to fight together, and learn to co-operate with each other.  Will the Titans and Olympians be able to set aside their differences, and take back the world from Hades?  Or is the world as we know it, doomed to fall under dark shadows, forever?
